Revelation 9

Fifth Trumpet/Woe
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2  And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3  And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4  And it was commanded them that they should not hurt [treat unrightously] the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 5  And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. 6  And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. 7  And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8  And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9  And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10  And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11  And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

  • Yahweh’s word that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? 3  Tell your children about it, and have your children tell their children, and their children, another generation. 4  What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten. 5  Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth. 6  For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the fangs of a lioness. 7  He has laid my vine waste, and stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white.  8  Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth! 9  The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh’s house. The priests, Yahweh’s ministers, mourn. 10  The field is laid waste. The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed, The new wine has dried up, and the oil languishes. 11  Be confounded, you farmers! Wail, you vineyard keepers; for the wheat and for the barley; for the harvest of the field has perished. 12  The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all of the trees of the field are withered; for joy has withered away from the sons of men. 13  Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, for the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God’s house. 14  Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, and all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, and cry to Yahweh. 15  Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty. 16  Isn’t the food cut off before our eyes; joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17  The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered. 18  How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. 19  Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. 20  Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, for the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.  Joel 1

Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of Yahweh comes, for it is close at hand: 2  A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn spreading on the mountains, a great and strong people; there has never been the like, neither will there be any more after them, even to the years of many generations. 3  A fire devours before them, and behind them, a flame burns. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them, a desolate wilderness. Yes, and no one has escaped them. 4  Their appearance is as the appearance of horses, and as horsemen, so do they run. 5  Like the noise of chariots on the tops of the mountains do they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devours the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. 6  At their presence the peoples are in anguish. All faces have grown pale. 7  They run like mighty men. They climb the wall like warriors. They each march in his line, and they don’t swerve off course. 8  Neither does one jostle another; they march everyone in his path, and they burst through the defenses, and don’t break ranks. 9  They rush on the city. They run on the wall. They climb up into the houses. They enter in at the windows like thieves. 10  The earth quakes before them. The heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 11  Yahweh thunders his voice before his army; for his forces are very great; for he is strong who obeys his command; for the day of Yahweh is great and very awesome, and who can endure it? 12  “Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.” 13  Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity. 14  Who knows? He may turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, even a meal offering and a drink offering to Yahweh, your God. 15  Blow the trumpet in Zion! Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. 16  Gather the people. Sanctify the assembly. Assemble the elders. Gather the children, and those who nurse from breasts. Let the bridegroom go out of his room, and the bride out of her room. 17  Let the priests, the ministers of Yahweh, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, “Spare your people, Yahweh, and don’t give your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’” 18  Then Yahweh was jealous for his land, And had pity on his people. 19  Yahweh answered his people, “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied with them; and I will no more make you a reproach among the nations. 20  But I will remove the northern army far away from you, and will drive it into a barren and desolate land, its front into the eastern sea, and its back into the western sea; and its stench will come up, and its bad smell will rise.” Surely he has done great things. 21  Land, don’t be afraid. Be glad and rejoice, for Yahweh has done great things. 22  Don’t be afraid, you animals of the field; for the pastures of the wilderness spring up, for the tree bears its fruit. The fig tree and the vine yield their strength. 23  “Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in Yahweh, your God; for he gives you the former rain in just measure, and he causes the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain, as before. 24  The threshing floors will be full of wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil. 25  I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you. 26  You will have plenty to eat, and be satisfied, and will praise the name of Yahweh, your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and my people will never again be disappointed. 27  You will know that I am among Israel, and that I am Yahweh, your God, and there is no one else; and my people will never again be disappointed. 28  “It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. 29  And also on the servants and on the handmaids in those days, I will pour out my Spirit. 30  I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. 31  The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes. 32  It will happen that whoever will call on Yahweh’s name shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.  Joel 2

“For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, 2  I will gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will execute judgment on them there for my people, and for my heritage, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations. They have divided my land, 3  and have cast lots for my people, and have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, that they may drink. 4  “Yes, and what are you to me, Tyre, and Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Will you repay me? And if you repay me, I will swiftly and speedily return your repayment on your own head. 5  Because you have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my finest treasures into your temples, 6  and have sold the children of Judah and the children of Jerusalem to the sons of the Greeks, that you may remove them far from their border. 7  Behold, I will stir them up out of the place where you have sold them, and will return your repayment on your own head; 8  and I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hands of the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the men of Sheba, to a faraway nation, for Yahweh has spoken it.” 9  Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war! Stir up the mighty men. Let all the warriors draw near. Let them come up. 10  Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’ 11  Hurry and come, all you surrounding nations, and gather yourselves together.” Cause your mighty ones to come down there, Yahweh. 12  “Let the nations arouse themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations. 13  Put in the sickle; for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full, the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.” 14  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of Yahweh is near, in the valley of decision. 15  The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 16  Yahweh will roar from Zion, and thunder from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth will shake; but Yahweh will be a refuge to his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel. 17  “So you will know that I am Yahweh, your God, dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Then Jerusalem will be holy, and no strangers will pass through her any more. 18  It will happen in that day, that the mountains will drop down sweet wine, the hills will flow with milk, all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters, and a fountain will flow out from Yahweh’s house, and will water the valley of Shittim. 19  Egypt will be a desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land. 20  But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation. 21  I will cleanse their blood, that I have not cleansed: for Yahweh dwells in Zion.”  Joel 3

SixthTrumpet/Woe
12  One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter. 13  And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14  Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. 15  And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. 16  And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. 17  And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. 18  By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. 19  For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. 20  And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21  Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt [treat unrighteously] you.  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.  Luke 10:17-20

  • On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”  Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold.  Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.”  Yahweh said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will blot out of my book.  Exodus 32:30-33

I tell the truth in Christ. I am not lying, my conscience testifying with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.  For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brothers’ sake, my relatives according to the flesh, who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises; of whom are the fathers, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God, blessed forever. Amen.  Romans 9:1-5

Be merciful to me, God, for man wants to swallow me up. All day long, he attacks and oppresses me.  My enemies want to swallow me up all day long, for they are many who fight proudly against me.  When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.  In God, I praise his word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?  All day long they twist my words. All their thoughts are against me for evil.  They conspire and lurk, watching my steps, they are eager to take my life.  Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, God.  You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your container. Aren’t they in your book?   Then my enemies shall turn back in the day that I call. I know this, that God is for me. In God, I will praise his word. In Yahweh, I will praise his word.  I have put my trust in God. I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?  Your vows are on me, God. I will give thank offerings to you.  For you have delivered my soul from death, and prevented my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living.  Psalm 56

Charge them with crime upon crime. Don’t let them come into your righteousness.  Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.  But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.  I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.  Psalms 69:27-30

For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.  My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.  How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is their sum!  If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.  Psalms 139:13-18

Therefore, my brothers, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.  I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to think the same way in the Lord.  Yes, I beg you also, true partner, help these women, for they labored with me in the Good News, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.  Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”  Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:1-7

He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.  Revelation 3:5,6

It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him.  All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed.  If anyone has an ear, let him hear.  Revelation 13:7-9

The angel said to me, “Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.  The beast that you saw was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss and to go into destruction. Those who dwell on the earth and whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel when they see that the beast was, and is not, and shall be present.  Revelation 17:7,8

I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.  The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works.  Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.  If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.   Revelation 20:12-15

There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.  Revelation 21:27

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.  Revelation 8:10,11

And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.   Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.  And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.  And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.  And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.  And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.  And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.   Revelation 12:7-17

2

He opened the pit of the abyss, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke from a burning furnace. The sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke from the pit.

  • There the fire will devour you. The sword will cut you off. It will devour you like the grasshopper. Multiply like grasshoppers. Multiply like the locust.  You have increased your merchants more than the stars of the skies. The grasshopper strips, and flees away.  Your guards are like the locusts, and your officials like the swarms of locusts, which settle on the walls on a cold day, but when the sun appears, they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.  Your shepherds slumber, king of Assyria. Your nobles lie down. Your people are scattered on the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.  There is no healing your wound, for your injury is fatal. All who hear the report of you clap their hands over you; for who hasn’t felt your endless cruelty?  Nahum 3:15-19

  • Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer. Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.  Psalms 17:4,5
